Three men are dead after a collision caused by an allegedly impaired driver near Pemberton Sunday morning.
According to the Pemberton RCMP, the car struck and killed two cyclists on Highway 99 north of Mount Currie and 15 kilometres east of the Birkenhead River.
A passenger in the car was also killed and the driver of the vehicle was airlifted to a Vancouver hospital.
Police received a call about the crash just before 12 p.m. Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said police are not releasing details about the identity of the victims or driver, except that they are all males.
“One of our officers went in the helicopter with [the driver] to maintain continuity, so we are conducting an impaired driving investigation,” LeClair said.
Highway 99 was closed in both directions for several hours.
“These are complex scenes so it will take a while to process all the evidence,” LeClair said. “The collision investigation team is on site as well as the coroner and our police officers as well.”
The scene of the crash does not have cell phone service making it more difficult for police to receive updates from investigators.
RCMP Victim Services has been called in to assist friends and family. Police are asking any witnesses to call Pemberton RCMP at 604-894-6634.
