A very tired 18-year-old has successfully completed his quest to break the record of Grouse Grind climbs in one day. Oliver Bibby went up the Grouse Mountain hiking trail in North Vancouver a total of 16 times Wednesday, beating the previous record of 15.

Bibby was raising money for the BC Children’s Hospital, and is this year’s top fundraiser for the Grind for Kids program. So far, he has raised over $3,000 with his grueling hikes.

The Grind is 2.9 kilometres long, but the real kicker is the 853-metre elevation gain.  It’s often hailed as nature’s Stairmaster.

“It felt really hard at the start of the last climb, but then at the end it just felt so good. It felt magical,” said Bibby once he had achieved his goal after nightfall.

So what’s next for the young athlete?

“Sleep,” said an exhausted Bibby. “And a lot of junk food.”
