West Vancouver police have located two 9 millimetre handguns left near a local elementary school Wednesday night.

The weapons were found in the backyard of a residence in the 3000-block of Rosebery Avenue, not far from West Bay Elementary School.

Police say a distraught man knocked on the door of a home in that block on Wednesday night, asking the residents to call police.

When officers arrived, they arrested the man under the provincial Mental Health Act.

Police were also told that two loaded pistols were left behind in a treed or green space area before they were called.

They say the man is being co-operative, but he hasn't been able to give police an accurate location of where the guns were discarded.

Police say there is no threat to the public, and classes are continuing at the school, but outdoor activities have been temporarily suspended.

Roughly 40 police and North Shore Search and Rescue personnel were involved in the search for the weapons.
