An arrest has been made in the murder of Surrey mom Julie Paskall, who was brutally attacked outside a minor hockey rink in the Newton neighbourhood late last year.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed the arrest Friday but said no charges have been laid.

IHIT described the news as a “significant development” in the five-month-old case but said it won’t be releasing any more details until a news conference with Paskall’s family Saturday afternoon.

The deceased’s husband Al Paskall told CTV News he hasn’t heard anything more about the arrest but will respond to the news after the police presser.

Paskall was viciously beaten during a robbery in the parking lot of the Newton Recreation Centre on Dec. 29 and died in hospital two days later.

Every bone in her face was broken.

The shocking murder led to rallies and calls for an increased police presence in Surrey. The city responded by pledging to add 24 more RCMP officers over the next two years.

Surrey also said it was brightening lights outside the hockey arena and removing some bushes to increase visibility.
