Fifth night of Hanukkah celebrated ahead of Manitoba Moose hockey game

As Jewish people around the world mark the fifth night of Hanukkah, members of Winnipeg’s Jewish community brought the celebration to Canada Life Centre.

Before the Manitoba Moose hit the ice for their game against the Texas Stars, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg held a menorah candle lighting ceremony. The annual week-long holiday celebrates light, joy and togetherness – with the latter being especially important during the holidays.

“We are so excited to celebrate the joy of Hanukkah in a familiar setting with so many young families from the Jewish community,” said Florencia Katz, the Jewish Federation’s director of education and engagement.

As part of the ceremony, families and children were taught the importance of the holiday, as well as the process by which a menorah is lit.

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg was also serving sufganiyot – jam-filled fried donuts – in the concourse during the Moose game.

While the Moose lost to the Stars, Katz said she is grateful the Jewish and non-Jewish community members got to take part in the festivities.

“It’s so wonderful to see so many young families being part of the celebration of this holiday and joining this fun event,” she said.
