A high-risk sex offender who disappeared in Vancouver after skipping a flight to Saskatchewan is back in police custody thanks to the "keen eye" of someone who spotted the felon on public transit.
Vancouver police issued a warning Friday to say the whereabouts of Antoine Naskathey were unknown, and a Canada-wide warrant was issued.
Less than 24 hours later police said Naskathey had been apprehended.
In a statement, Vancouver police said Naskathey was arrested without incident after being spotted on a SkyTrain in Burnaby "thanks to the keen eye of a member of the public."
The disappearance of the two-time federal offender, who is currently serving a six-year-long supervision order, was troubling to authorities.
The 36-year-old has more than 50 convictions since 1994, including two convictions for breaking into homes and sexually assaulting women in 2001 and 2009.
At a sentencing hearing in 2003, a judge in the Northwest Territories described Naskathey's record as "horrendous," and the attack of a 59-year-old woman as "brutal" and "a deliberate and persistent act."
Naskathey had been living in a Vancouver halfway house temporarily, and was to be transferred to a residence in Saskatchewan.
Naskathey, who is "gender variant and does identify as female at times," remains in custody.
