A Vancouver suburb has shared video of a trio of black bear cubs playing in hopes it will remind residents that area bruins are waking up from hibernation.

Footage captured by Port Moody resident Elle Brovold on Monday night shows bear cubs tumbling and playing at the side of Forest Park Way.

The City of Port Moody posted the video to its Facebook page to remind residents that curious bruins will soon be waking up and, most likely, visiting residential neighbourhoods.

Officials say it’s key that people learn how to peacefully “co-exist safely with these beautiful creatures” because of the city’s proximity to their mountainous habitat.

It also comes ahead of the city’s free “Bear Essentials” seminar on bear awareness.

The Wednesday evening workshop features practical tips on how to respond to bear encounters appropriately, and how to be “bear aware” on local trails.

Its Bear Essentials program offers these tips:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
  • Make noise to alert wildlife
  • Keep children near
  • Keep dogs on leash
  • When possible, walk or hike in groups
  • Stay particularly alert at dawn and dusk, and when seasonal food sources such as fish and berries are available
  • Avoid areas that have fresh sign of bears such as fresh tracks and droppings
