WorkSafeBC is investigating the death of two cleaning company employees in a Richmond townhouse after their bodies were found inside a garage on Monday evening.

Firefighters said they detected the presence of carbon monoxide in the garage after emergency crews were called to the townhouse near Blundell Road and Ash Street at approximately 8 p.m.

The two men, ages 63 and 45, were hired to clean the house after the residents moved out.

WorkSafeBC spokesperson Donna Freeman said the property manager received a call from the cleaners at approximately 4 p.m. saying they expected to complete their work by 6 p.m.

When the manager did not hear back from the cleaners, he went to the townhouse and found the two men unconscious in the garage.

There does not appear to be criminal involvement in the case, police said.

WorkSafeBC will investigate the deaths for compliance of health and safety laws, but a coroner will determine the actual cause of death.

The two victims have not been identified and the investigation could take weeks or months, Freeman said.
