The murder trial for a 31-year-old Langley man accused of killing two sex trade workers began Wednesday in New Westminster, B.C.

Davey Mato Butorac was arrested in January 2008 and is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 46-year-old Gwendolyn Jo Lawton of Abbotsford and Sheryl Lynn Koroll, 50, of Langley.

Both women were believed to be involved in drugs and prostitution. Lawton's body was found on a gravel road, while Koroll's body was discovered by workers in an industrial area near Langley.

Police said the victims were targeted because "their killer saw an opportunity to take advantage of their vulnerable lifestyles.''

Investigators linked Butorac to the women through DNA evidence.

Butorac has pleaded not-guilty to both charges.
