Vancouver police have released a composite sketch of a teenager suspected in the sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl.

Police say the assault occurred Monday night about 6 p.m. while the girl sat on a bench near W. 32nd Avenue and Arbutus Street.

A man convinced the girl to follow him to a nearby park where he sexually assaulted her and threatened her, police said.

The girl then fled and made her way to the back of the nearby Arbutus Square Mall to seek help.

The suspect is described as being in his early teens, stands 5-1 to 5-5, and has short blond hair. He was wearing jeans, a black coat, and high-top runners with either black and purple or black and green markings. He was carrying a black backpack with a Nike swoosh.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Sex Crimes Unit at 604-717-3473.
