CRANBROOK, B.C. - An RCMP corporal says a 40-year-old man who jumped into a river during a police pursuit in British Columbia's East Kootenay region remains missing.

Corporal Dan Moskaluk says members of a drug task force servicing the cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley found two men who were allegedly in the possession of a large amount of cocaine on Wednesday.

One of the men was taken into custody but Moskaluk says the second fled and jumped into the Kootenay River.

Moskaluk says local search-and-rescue members and additional officers, including a police dog team and a RCMP helicopter, scoured the river.

Thirty-five-year-old Jared Strecheniuk of Calgary has appeared in Cranbrook provincial court on a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking and is expected to re-appear on Monday.

Moskaluk says police want to ensure the safety of 40-year-old Jason Baker so they are still looking for him but will also be seeking a warrant for his arrest.
