Surrey RCMP have issued a public warning after an increase in the number of residential break-ins using garage door openers.

Between April and June there were 37 residential break-and-enters in Surrey where the suspect entered a garage using a garage door opener left in a vehicle.

“Taking steps to help reduce property crime is everyone’s responsibility,” said Cpl. Scotty Schumann in a release. “It only takes a thief a few moments to get into your car, find the garage door opener, and then have access to your home. Take the time to remove all valuables from plain sight in your vehicle including garage door openers.”

In April, break-and-enters with garage door openers made up 4 per cent of all Surrey break-ins and 3 per cent of all break-and-enters in May. So far in June that rate has jumped to 11 per cent.

The Surrey RCMP is working to identify suspects in areas where similar crimes could happen and tracking chronic offenders.
