Skin cancer is almost epidemic with more than one million cases diagnosed each year. Using sunscreen is a key part of prevention.

Television programs often show young, beautiful people with a golden tan. For example, MTV's show Jersey Shore doesn't appear to be a big fan of sunscreens and that's too bad.

"There is no such thing as a safe tan. Ultraviolet B rays can damage the skin by causing sunburn. And ultraviolet A rays can wrinkle the skin and can cause cancer," Consumer Reports' Dr. John Sants said.

Sunscreen is an important way to protect yourself. Consumer Reports tested a dozen sunscreens, including sprays, lotions, and a cream. All claim to protect against UVB rays and most against UVA rays. But the SPF number on labels only pertains to UVB rays.

Consumer Reports conducts tests to see how well sunscreens protect against both types of rays.

At an independent lab, products are applied to people's backs. Then they're subjected to either UVB rays or UVA rays.

Many of the sunscreens claim to be water-resistant, so Consumer Reports tested for that as well.

Some of the most expensive products weren't the best. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios 40 costs $19 an ounce and is not recommended.

Consumer Reports says a better choice is the Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous with an SPF of 30 which is sufficient for most people. And it only costs $1.60 an ounce.

Also recommended is the Aveeno Continuous Protection with SPF 45 for those who want more protection.

Whatever sunscreen you use, use lots of it, and don't forget to reapply every two hours when you are out in the sun or after swimming.

And be aware, tests found almost all of the sunscreens stain fabrics, so you need to be sure to wash it off when you get home.

The Consumer Reports highest rated sunscreen for kids is the Coppertone Waterbabies SPF 50

If you find your sunscreen doesn't seem to be protecting you like it should there may be a reason. You need to apply that first coat 30 minutes before you go out in the sun as it loses much of its effectiveness if you apply it when you are already in the sun.

You may also not be using enough sunscreen. One bottle is only supposed to last an adult in a bathing suit two to four days –- not the whole summer.
