A man scheduled to appear in court today facing child sex charges has gone missing, spurring a massive manhunt in Sooke.
Searchers once again combed the woods Thursday around the Sooke Potholes looking for any sign of Robert Deryk, also known as “Bonsai Bob” for his extensive collection of trees.
Deryk, 74, was to enter his plea for charges of sexual assault against two boys aged 12 and 13. He went missing at around 9 a.m. Monday.
The charges relate to incidents that happened in September 2012 at the Sooke Potholes, the same area crews are now searching for him.
“We have groups from all over the place, and they’ll continue to come in as long as required. They’ll keep the search going as long as need be,” said Sgt. Steve Wright.
“His residence is just below us here, he’s lived here for 20 years. He’s very familiar with the forest, so if anyone knows the area that would be him.”
RCMP alleged there may be more victims of Deryk – possibly dating back as far as 20 years – and are asking them and any other witnesses to come forward.
Deryk is likely wearing a bright orange puffy jacket, officials said. If you see him, you are asked to call Sooke RCMP.
