Ten homes in Richmond had to be evacuated for several hours on Monday evening after police found explosives in what they thought was a marijuana drug bust.

Police were executing a search warrant at the site of a suspected marijuana grow operation, and discovered seven explosive devices in their search.

"These cylinders were ... long and ... wide," said Cpl. Nycki Basra of the Richmond RCMP.

After examination by explosive experts, the cylinders were determined to be safe enough to be removed from the residence and removed by the explosive disposal team.

The area of Odlin Crescent between Brown Road and Sorensen Road was closed to traffic while authorities cleared the area of dangerous materials.

Officials did find a marijuana grow operation, but the house was vacant and no one was arrested.

Richmond RCMP say the raid is connected to a synthetic drug lab found on River Road on Friday.

Five Richmond residents, three men and two women, have been charged in connection to the Friday incident and are expected to appear in court this week.
