A 35-year-old man is in hospital after being hit by a car Friday night in Richmond.

At around 11 p.m. the man was struck while crossing No. 1 Road near Blundell Road. He was rushed to the hospital unconscious with serious injuries, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Police closed the road while the initial investigation took place.

RCMP say speed is not believed to be a factor and the driver is cooperating.

The RCMP Road Safety unit and collision analysts are continuing their investigation.

This year there have been nine car-related fatalities in Richmond, four of which have been pedestrians.

In November the police launched a campaign to hand out reflective bands to increase pedestrians’ visibility.

“The number of pedestrian accidents we’ve had here is just tragic,” Cpl. Stephanie Ashton said. “We keep trying to get the message out that people need to stop and wait for vehicles before crossing the roads.”

The same night about an hour before just to the south on Youngmore Road, RCMP were called to investigate a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a car. Both drivers and the passenger of one vehicle were taken to the hospital, treated for injuries and released later that night.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
