A woman is in critical condition after being struck by a car while walking her dog in Surrey Monday night.

Witnesses said a grey Mercedes SUV was trying to pass another vehicle on King George Boulevard when it hit an illegally parked car, sending it into a utility pole, then plowed into the woman and her dog.

The 66-year-old victim was airlifted to hospital with extensive injuries. Her dog died at the scene.

Mounties said the SUV driver, a 17-year-old girl, is in the graduated licensing program and her car was overloaded with five passengers.

“She was detained for investigation of dangerous driving causing bodily harm,” Sgt. Dale Carr said in a release. “Investigators are working to determine the actions of the driver prior to the collisions as well as all contributing factors.”

The teenager and some of her passengers suffered minor injuries in the accident, but none were seriously hurt.

Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team is probing the crash with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call Mounties at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
