A snowboarder has died after falling into a tree well at Blackcomb Mountain in B.C.

Whistler Mounties say a passing skier noticed the man hanging upside down in a hollow at the base of a tree in the 7th Heaven area of the hill Wednesday morning. The skier tried to pull the unconscious snowboarder out on his own, but was unsuccessful and had to hike back up the slope to get help.

A group of skiers and snowboarders managed to pull the man out and begin CPR before ski patrollers, a doctor and a paramedic arrived to take over. The unresponsive man was airlifted out and taken to hospital, but he could not recover and was pronounced dead.

Police say the snowboarder was riding within the boundaries of an open run when he fell. Mounties are reminding skiers and snowboarders to ride with friends and keep their eyes open for natural hazards.

The name of the victim is not being released while police notify his family.
