The Vancouver Canucks signed forward Ryan Kesler to a six-year contract extension Friday morning, agreeing to keep the alternate captain through the 2015-2016 season.

Kesler, 25, is in his sixth season with the Canucks. This is the third consecutive season Kesler has recorded 20 or more goals. He is tied for 21st in NHL scoring and tied for sixth in power play goals this season.

Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis said it's an exciting day for the team.

"Ryan Kesler has excelled as a two-way player and in his role as an alternate captain. Ryan has showcased his ability to perform under extreme pressure and we are looking forward to continuing to see Ryan develop into one of the League's premier players."

This has truly been a year to remember for the Livonia, Michigan native, from being on pace to put up career offensive numbers, winning a silver medal with Team USA at the recent Olympics in Vancouver to being named the cover athlete for upcoming NHL 2K11 the video game.

The six-foot-two, 202-pound centre has appeared in 390 NHL games, recording 204 points (85-119-204) and 337 penalty minutes.

Kesler was nominated for the NHL's Selke Trophy for the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game following the 2008-2009 season. He was also awarded the Cyclone Taylor Award as the Vancouver Canucks MVP.

Kesler was drafted by the Canucks 23rd overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
