RCMP is investigating the possible link between the street drug fentanyl and the death of a 31-year-old North Vancouver man on Friday.

The man was found in distress by a family member, who called police. Despite efforts to resuscitate the man, he died at the scene.

Police say further investigation has revealed a suspected link to the opiate-based drug fentanyl, and are warning the public to be careful.

"We won't know for certain the cause of death, but even the suspicion of a link to fentanyl warrants another public safety announcement,” Cpl. Geoff Harder said in a media release. "If you use street drugs, you should take precautions. The risk of overdosing while using opiate based drugs, including fentanyl, is high."

Several fentanyl warnings that have been issued in the last several weeks, including the death of a Vancouver teen on Monday.

The drug is 50 to 100 times more toxic than morphine, and has been linked to many recent overdose deaths, police say.
