A 26-year-old man who viciously assaulted a bus driver earlier this year in Surrey has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Sean Tyler Quaye entered a surprise guilty plea Thursday just hours into his trial for the March 26 beating, which left driver Jagdeep Grewal with a broken nose, cracked cheekbone, and loosened teeth.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jenkins described Quaye’s crime as “beyond comprehension,” and said he would have handed down a harsher sentence if he could have.

Jenkins also ordered Quaye to serve three years’ probation, during which time he’ll be banned from using all Metro Vancouver transit.

The defence said Quaye has been an addict since he was 16, and was drunk and high on methampetamines the night of the attack.

Grewal was driving the 341 bus roughly 30 kilometres an hour toward an intersection when Quaye punched him in the face.

On top of his injuries, the Surrey father suffered mental trauma, and hasn’t driven since.
