An SUV driver is in hospital with serious injuries after crashing with a bus in the George Massey Tunnel on Friday afternoon.

RCMP said the man was heading southbound in the counterflow lane when he slammed head-on into a 620 bus around 5 p.m.

He was severly hurt, suffering multiple broken bones, but authorities said none of the roughly 35 passengers on the bus were badly injured. Many could be seen leaving the tunnel on foot shortly after the crash.

The bus driver told CTV News it appeared the tunnel sustained damage in the crash, but the extent has not been confirmed.

Investigators haven't determined the cause of the accident but said alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

Authorities closed the northbound lanes of the highway and don’t expect to reopen them before midnight Friday. Drivers are advised to find an alternative route.

TransLink said buses are being detoured onto the Alex Fraser Bridge.
