A provincial court judge has sentenced Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger to a one-year driving ban and a $600 fine on Thursday after he was convicted of driving while over the legal limit of blood alcohol.

The judge told Kroeger he could get six months in jail if he violates the driving ban.

"I say, don't drink and drive," Kroeger said when asked what he wanted to tell his fans. "I don't condone drinking and driving and everyone makes mistakes."

Kroeger, whose real name is Chad Turton, was convicted last month after he was pulled over by police in June 2006 for speeding in a Lamborghini.

When the officer smelled alcohol, the musician was given a breath test, which showed he had twice the legal limit in his system.

Kroeger's lawyer says he will appeal the conviction, saying the police officer violated his charter rights when he asked Kroeger to blow in his face after he smelled alcohol.

Originally from Hanna, Alta., Nickelback is based in Vancouver, B.C., and has won nine Juno Awards and several Grammy nominations. The band was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2007.
