The B.C. Court of Appeal quadrupled the jail sentence of former Hells Angel Randy Richard Potts Friday.

Potts' was originally sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to conspiracy to produce and traffic methamphetamine, two counts of cocaine trafficking and unlawful possession of proceeds of crime in Dec. 2009.

The crown appealed, saying the judge failed to impose a sentence that properly reflected the seriousness of the crimes.

The appeal was successful and Potts' jail time was increased to five years. Potts received one-year of credit for time already served, resulting in a total sentence of four years.

The charges resulted from a two-year RCMP investigation that involved a paid police agent who infiltrated the Angels.

Potts's co-accused at the time, John Punko, was given a 14-month sentence, which was also overturned by B.C.'s Appeal Court last August.

In that appeal, the court increased Punko's sentence to five years and two months.

Both Potts and Punko pleaded guilty in December 2009 to conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, trafficking in cocaine, and possession of the proceeds of crime -- $387,000 in cash.

At the time of sentencing, Justice Peter Leask said he would have sentenced Potts to four and a half years in prison had he been found guilty at trial.

Instead, he deducted six months because Potts had several medical conditions a year for the guilty plea, and another year for "the effect of certain police conduct on Potts while police were pursuing their investigation."

The two-year sentence was then cut in half for the time Potts spent in pre-trial custody.

But the three-judge appeal panel overturned the sentence, saying a conspiracy such as the one Potts was involved in is a "despicable endeavour" which causes substantial harm to society.

The panel also said the judge gave too much weight to mitigating factors in the case, which overshadowed the goals of denunciation.

"In combination, the two errors to which I have referred resulted in an unfit sentence," wrote ruling Justice Anne Rowles.
