Homicide investigators were called to Burnaby early Thursday morning after a gravely injured man was found in the middle of the road.

Just before 3 a.m., an RCMP officer on routine patrol spotted a bloody man lying face down suffering a wound in his chest.

Ambulances rushed to Moscrop Street, but the unidentified man could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s still unclear if he was injured at the scene or was dumped there.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says foul play is suspected in the death, but that its probe is still in its infancy.

“We are hoping to speak with anyone who was out and about in the area of Moscrop in the hours leading up to the discovery of this man.” Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said in a statement issued to media.

A large section of Moscrop Street was closed east of Boundary for several hours as police started their probe.

Investigators went door-to-door interviewing residents, and K9 teams combed through people's front yards.
