Mounties in Coquitlam are searching for a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian and did not remain at the scene.
The 51-year-old man was struck around 8 p.m. Thursday on Austin Avenue near Blue Mountain Street.
Investigators were at the scene for several hours and taped off a large area. At least 30 evidence markers could be seen on the ground, and a pile of clothes was visible at the side of the road.
The pedestrian wasn't in a marked crosswalk when he was hit, and Const. Michael McLaughlin said it's unclear if the driver knew exactly what happened.
"Until we hear from you, the driver, we won’t know your side and thus we won’t have the complete picture of what happened," he said in a statement.
A couple of passersby stopped to help. The victim, a Coquitlam resident, was rushed to hospital but did not survive.
Residents say vehicles often speed on Austin Avenue at all hours, and the fatal crash isn't very surprising.
"We have a couple of young kids and of course it's always a concern. We don't even let them walk home from school," said Ray Seller.
There is no description of the suspect vehicle. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call RCMP or CrimeStoppers.
