Flood watch continued Sunday for a number of B.C. communities, as sub-tropic storm systems continue to drench the region with heavy rain.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning Sunday for the entire South Coast, save for Greater Victoria.

Officials predict an additional 80-200 millimetres will fall Sunday and Monday.

Squamish, Whistler, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Mission and areas of West and Central Vancouver Island are all on alert.

Roughly one metre of snow tops the coastal mountains, and could raise river levels rapidly if it melts.

On Vancouver Island, snowmelt has already been reported. High river flows and flooding are expected by late Monday or Tuesday.

But flooding isn't the only concern. In 2005, intense storms caused a landslide in the District of North Vancouver that swept two homes down an embankment, killing one 43-year-old resident.

"It can happen within 12 to 14 hours if you get those intensive tropical rains," mayor Richard Walton said.

"I think we're much better prepared for these kinds of events than we have been past years."

The River Forecast Centre will provide an update on conditions by 8 a.m. Monday.
