A city councillor from Metro Vancouver has been accused of two sexual offences dating back more than two decades, one of which allegedly involved someone under the age of 14.

Court documents show counts of sexual assault and sexual interference have been laid against David Murray, who was elected to Pitt Meadows city council in 2011.

Murray coached basketball at Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam for 20 years, and spent 10 years coaching at Capilano College as well.

He's a maintenance worker with Port Coquitlam's department of parks, and has taken some time off.

"We'll assess things in the new year when we see how this progresses," said Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore.

Moore told CTV News he was "shocked" when he learned of the allegations, saying he's known Murray for 20 years and first met the councillor through the basketball program.

Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker, a longtime friend of Murray's, said he won't be asking the councillor to resign while the case is before the courts, noting the accused is innocent until proven guilty.

Becker, who is also a lawyer, said he doesn't have jurisdiction to demand Murray's resignation anyway, as he's an elected official.

Court documents show the charges against Murray, who is a former federal NDP candidate, are in connection with an alleged incident that took place sometime in 1992.

The sexual interference charge allegedly involves someone under the age of 14. The crime is defined under the Criminal Code as touching, directly or indirectly, a person with a part of one's body for a sexual purpose.
