Washington Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's first star for January on Monday after picking up 26 points in 15 games.

Vancouver Canucks centre Henrik Sedin was named the second star and Florida Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun was named the third.

Ovechkin was made team captain Jan. 4 and went on to lead the league in scoring for the month.

The Capitals went 13-2-0 in January and are currently riding a 10-game winning streak.

Sedin finished just one point behind Ovechkin in January with 25 points in 13 games, and led the league with 78 points overall going into Monday's games.

Vokoun had four shutouts in January, to go along with a 1.49 goals-against average and .956 save percentage.

He has seven shutouts so far and is tied with New Jersey Devil Martin Brodeur for the league lead.
