Four drivers and their high-end vehicles were stopped by police after they were caught allegedly street racing on Highway 1 toward the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge Tuesday morning at around 2:20 a.m.

A traffic officer was able to catch up to the vehicles -- a BMW M3, Suburu Impreza, Nissan 370Z and a Porsche Cayman -- and paced the cars going 160 kilometres per hour in a 70 kilometre zone.

Police stopped the four vehicles before the bridge and impounded them. The four male drivers -- all between the ages of 21 and 23 -- were fined $483 for excessive speeding.

Police said all of the drivers have extensive driving histories. Three of the men only had Class 7 Learners licences and multiple previous driving prohibitions.

“These drivers made a very poor choice resulting in the loss of their vehicles and significant fines,” RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said in a release. “They appear to have had a disregard for the public’s safety as well as their own.”
