The B.C. SPCA has launched an investigation after the gruesome discovery of three dead horses covered in debris in Langley, B.C.

The animals were found piled on top of each other underneath plywood and tires nearly two weeks ago in a pasture near 240 Street.

One of the animals was still wearing a blanket and another had a red and white lead rope around its neck, according to Senior Animal Protection Officer Eileen Drever.

"So clearly it was dragged there," Drever said.

It is believed the dead animals were left on the property for quite some time.

"We are desperately looking for an owner of these horses," Drever said.

Efforts by an SPCA veterinarian on Friday to collect tissues samples for a necropsy were unsuccessful because the animal's tissue was so dehydrated.

"It wasn't an option," Drever said. "So we've sent a few of the legs to a lab in Indiana to analyze the fatty stores and find out more."

The agency is now waiting on preliminary results that will hopefully indicate the age of the horses and how they died. Results are expected by the end of the week.

Anyone with information about the owners of these horses is asked to contact the SPCA at 604-709-4670.
