A 22-year-old man is in serious condition after being shot several times in the torso and once in the cheek near Surrey Memorial Hospital overnight.

Mounties were called to a path near 93rd Avenue and 138th Street shortly before midnight with multiple reports of shots fired.

Officers arrived to find the victim suffering bullet wounds to his face, shoulder and spine, but Insp. Steve Wade said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

"The person was conscious and talking when we got here," Wade said early Tuesday morning at the scene. "He's been taken to an area hospital where he's being worked on."

The shooting appears to be targeted, and police believe the victim and suspect know each other. There is no evidence of a gang-affiliation, however.

Mounties are searching for a suspect who was pulled over at a traffic stop in the area, but fled. A police dog has so far been unable to locate him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
