A man convicted in the violent kidnapping of a B.C. teenager a decade ago has been deported to Hong Kong.

Canada Border Services Agency confirms Chi Wai Chan was removed from Canada last Tuesday.

Chi was serving a 10-year sentence for the brutal 1998 kidnapping of a teenage girl for ransom.

On Dec. 11, 1998, a group of armed men barged into a Richmond, B.C., home and kidnapped the girl - the only child of a couple from Hong Kong who immigrated to Canada in 1994.

Facing deportation upon his release, Chi fled a minimum-security institution last December but was arrested in Edmonton earlier this year after a Canada-wide warrant was issued.

He remained in CBSA custody until his deportation.
