Mounties have arrested a 23-year-old Surrey man accused of stealing a truck and smashing into three police cruisers Sunday.

Police received a tip at around 10:50 a.m. that occupants of a “suspicious vehicle” were trying to break into parked cars in the 8600-block of 141st Street in Surrey.

Officers responded but couldn’t find the car in the area.

Then at around 11:30, Mounties located the suspect vehicle in the 8200-block of King George Boulevard with at least two people inside and called for backup.

“The occupants of the stolen vehicle appear to have seen the police cars arriving in the area, and started to drive off,” said Staff-Sgt. Murray Hedderson.

That’s when the stolen truck rammed into three police cruisers, severely damaging two of the vehicles, according to Hedderson.

The truck broke down after slamming into the third cruiser and a passenger fled before the truck came to a complete stop. Police gave chase with a tracking dog, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Police then arrested the driver of the stolen truck at the scene. The suspect, who has not been identified, is expected to appear in Surrey Provincial Court Monday on several charges, police said.

Hedderson said the Mounties whose cars were struck as well as the suspect arrested were not injured.

Surrey RCMP are asking any witnesses who may have seen the incident or those who had their vehicle broken into Sunday morning to call them at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
