Although people living near a massive landslide in B.C. have been allowed back into their homes, police warn the area remains unstable.

As many as 15-hundred residents in and around the community of Pemberton were allowed to return home yesterday.

They were ordered out of their homes Friday night after the slide dammed a creek and partly blocked the Lillooet River.

Officials were worried a build-up of water would overflow and come crashing down into homes -- but the water started to drain and the threat eased.

Officials have also lifted an evacuation alert for about four-thousand other residents.

The RCMP, however, say the area is still unstable and people should stay away from the river bank.

Officials say the slide north of Vancouver was only slightly smaller than the 1965 slide near Hope, B.C., considered the largest in Canadian history.
