The Squamish First Nation has constructed the first of six digital billboards planned to line B.C. bridges and highways in time for the Olympics.

The three-metre high by nine-metre wide billboard stands at the south end of the Burrard Bridge in Vancouver.

Five more signs have been approved, including billboards at the Lions Gate and Iron Workers Memorial bridges and outside Squamish on the Sea to Sky Highway.

The signs feature LED lighting and will display six static ads per minute, changing every 10 seconds.

North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton has expressed concerns that the brightness of the signs will distract drivers.

"The intent of these things is to draw people's attention away from the road," Walton said.

"We have strong concerns, not only about the aesthetic but certainly about safety as well."

The federal government approved the plans in September.

It's expected the billboards will pump millions of dollars into Squamish Nation coffers.
