A man who police say tried to run down a female Mountie with his car when she stopped him for impaired driving is facing seven criminal charges.

Forty-five-year-old Louis Marcel Robert was arrested in Whistler on Tuesday after allegedly fleeing a roadside stop in Pemberton.

He had been stopped by an RCMP officer after she noticed a Mercury Topaz driving erratically on Portage Road. Police say she was questioning Robert when he decided to flee.

"Police are alleging that the driver then made an immediate U-turn, driving straight back at the police officer who had pulled him over. The police officer was forced to run toward the curb," Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said in a release.

The officer was not injured.

Mounties say the Topaz headed south on Highway 99, driving in an "extremely dangerous manner." Officers say they saw the vehicle passing several others on a solid line and even around a blind corner.

Robert was arrested after a minor crash, and has now been charged with seven counts, including impaired and dangerous driving, causing a police pursuit and assault with a weapon.

He will remain in police custody until his next court appearance Sept. 20.
