There are a lot of eye-catching attractions in downtown Vancouver. A wild deer on the loose usually isn’t one of them.

But that’s exactly what scores of people spotted while heading into work Tuesday morning: a young deer trotting down busy Granville Street.

The confused animal caused quite a commotion at the Nelson Street crosswalk, and quickly became a social media sensation. It wasn’t long before the @downtowndeer Twitter account was born and messaging Mayor Gregor Robertson.

“I’m at your front door and I’m not leaving until you fast track those designated deer lanes,” one tweet reads.

The previous night, a CTV News viewer captured video of a deer enjoying a summer swim around Vancouver’s seawall. It’s unclear whether it’s the same animal that was hoofing it through the downtown core Tuesday.

Police confirmed the young deer eventually managed to escaped the busy roadways, apparently unharmed.

“The young deer who was wandering the streets of Vancouver has decided to head back into Stanley Park in search of greener pastures,” Sgt. Randy Fincham said in an email.
