Vancouver police are asking residents to be careful about locking their windows and doors as they head outdoors to cool off this summer, after a spike in break-ins through unsecured entrances.

According to Vancouver Police Department statistics, the number of residential break-ins through unlocked doors and windows has risen sharply since the weather started heating up.

In May, just 16 per cent of break-ins were committed through unlocked entries, but that number rose to 30 per cent in June and again to 40 per cent in July.

In the week beginning Aug. 4, police responded to 64 residential break-ins across the cities, with the highest concentration of incidents in Strathcona, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Arbutus Ridge and the southwestern portion of Granville Street downtown.
