Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side investigates ratings for charities and the success of a local fundraising campaign.
Charity reviews
Charitable giving increases around holiday time. Gerry wrote Steele on Your Side to find out where he can locate independent reviews on charitable organizations and how much money actually reaches the intended recipients.
Each year MoneySense Magazine puts together its Charity 100 list, a rating system that gives a letter grade to the 100 biggest charities in Canada.
Charity Intelligence Canada is another site that ranks 400 charities on a scale of 0 to 4 stars.
Scarves for Water campaign
The story about the Obakki Foundation’s “Scarves for Water Campaign” received a lot of reaction from CTV viewers.
The blue INK scarf sold out within 48 hours of the CTV story airing, which means a well will be built in the South Sudan village of Amedechi sooner than expected.
The Obakki Foundation has also launched three new scarves. 100 per cent of the money raised from those sales will be used to build three more wells in the Wulu region of South Sudan.
