Two pets had to be rescued from an Abbotsford townhouse when a fire broke out in the basement.

Firefighters were called to the home on Marshall Road on Thursday as the house filled with smoke. When they arrived, they were told that the family's cat and dog were still inside the building.

The dog was found quickly, and had a happy reunion with its owner in the parking lot after being escorted outside to safety.

The cat took longer to rescue, and wasn't doing as well as its canine companion. It had to be treated with a specialized pet oxygen mask, and was pretty weak at the time.

"The cat suffered some extensive smoke inhalation," Assistant Fire Chief Craig Bird told CTV News, but officials later said that it is expected to recover.

It's believed that the fire started in a mattress in the basement of the townhouse.
