Calgary police say the death of a man whose body was found in the downtown core over the weekend was the victim of a fatal assault.
Police were called to the 700 block of Fifth Street S.W. just after 5 a.m. on Sunday after a man was found unresponsive on the sidewalk.
An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday.
Police say the victim is 34-year-old Samuel Mulugeta of Calgary.
“Prior to being located on the sidewalk, it is believed the victim walked along the Third Street S.W. CTrain platform at approximately 4:20 a.m., when he crossed paths with a group of individuals who are believed to be known to him,” police said in a Tuesday news release.
“In the brief interaction between the victim and the group, it is believed Samuel was robbed of his belongings and suffered an injury, later resulting in his death.”
Investigators believe the attack was targeted, and say Mulugeta walked for “several blocks” before succumbing to his injuries.
Police are hoping to speak with anyone who had been in contact with Mulugeta in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 12.
Investigators are also looking to the public for help identifying three suspects believed to be responsible for the deadly attack – two men and a woman.
Anyone with information on the attack or the identity of the suspects is asked to call police at 403-266-1234.
