Man charged with 2024 murder of fellow patient at East Coast Forensic Hospital

A man has been charged with the murder of a fellow patient at the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth, N.S., last year.

Halifax Regional Police responded to the hospital on May 9, 2024, after a patient allegedly assaulted another patient. Police say a 69-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mohamed Issak, 32, was charged with aggravated assault and remanded back to the hospital the next day.

Police say the victim, Allen Nickerson, died in hospital on July 6, 2024.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has found that Nickerson’s death was a homicide.

As a result, police say the charge against Issak has been upgraded to second-degree murder.

Issak is due to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Thursday.
