A 36-year-old Abbotsford man has died after crashing his car into an empty coal train early Saturday.
Police say it happened just before 3 a.m. First responders found the wreckage of a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta and its driver dead at the scene.
The collision derailed the train about five kilometres south of where the incident happened, toppling several power poles and leaving thousands of Abbotsford residents without electrivity for much of the day.
Most of the power was restored later Saturday, according to BC Hydro.
The identity of the driver has not been released.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
