Just a few kilometres from where she was murdered while running through a park on Vancouver's west side, family and friends of Wendy Ladner-Beaudry gathered for her memorial service.

Hundreds of people packed a building on the University of British Columbia campus Saturday in memory of Ladner-Beaudry, who was well-known for her involvement in the sport community.

Ladner-Beaudry, the sister of former Vancouver mayoral candidate Peter Ladner, was killed while running through the trails of Pacific Spirit Park on April 3.

Her husband Michel Beaudry paid a touching tribute his late wife, calling her "a bright ray of sunshine."

"No matter how brutal and senseless her death was, her gentle ways of goodness touch us all,'' he said. Ladner-Beaudry, he said, lived what she believed every day of her life.

The memorial for the 53-year-old woman comes just 24 hours after 500 supporters gathered to symbolically take back the park where she died.

Earlier this week, police issued a public warning saying they couldn't eliminate the possibility that she was the victim of a random attack.

RCMP Cpl. Peter Thiessen said police have received 110 tips and canvassed over 700 residents in the area around UBC's Pacific Spirit Park, where the woman's body was found.
