A young girl who was hit by a car in Abbotsford has died in hospital of her injuries.
A Toyota Corolla struck the 5-year-old-girl just before 6 p.m. Tuesday evening in an alley near Homestead Crescent. Witnesses said the girl was on her way to play at a neighbour’s house when she was hit.
Police said the young girl died in hospital Wednesday, and extended sympathies to the family.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid.
The 42-year-old female driver and her passenger stayed at the scene and Abbotsford Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance personnel provided medical treatment to the girl. The young girl was then airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital with very serious injuries.
“Although it's preliminary, we believe that this five-year-old girl entered onto this back alley and roadway, essentially in the path of this vehicle,” said Cst. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department.
Baljit Dhaliwal, the driver’s husband, said his wife is devastated.
“[The] fence door [was] wide open … she couldn't stop. [The ] baby just came in front of the car,” he told CTV News through tears.
Some neighbours want speed bumps put in the alley while others want the gate into the laneway to be locked.
“They want these gates to be closed because usually people come running out and they don't see that there's a car here,” said neighbor Ravneet Sidhu. “Little kids usually play around this neighborhood.”
