VANCOUVER -- Mounties in North Vancouver say one person is dead and two others are seriously injured after a head-on crash.

The collision happened Tuesday night on Low Level Road, and led to closures between East 3rd Street and St. Andrews Avenue.

Police say a driver heading west crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming car at about 11 p.m.

The female driver of the eastbound vehicle was killed and the male passenger was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This is a tragic day,” said Sgt. Peter Devries of North Vancouver RCMP. “The family and friends of this woman who died in this collision, they’re going to be going through some very difficult times in the next days and weeks.”

The car that crossed the centre line caught fire, but the driver managed to get out. He has serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Mounties say alcohol and speed may be factors.

“We want to ensure the public that we take these incidents very seriously, and that we continue to do everything in our power to make our roads safe here in North Vancouver,” added Devries.
