Heavy downpours and possible flash floods are in the forecast after Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver Wednesday.

The agency says the rain will pick up in intensity late Wednesday afternoon and into the night. Between 30 to 50 to millimetres of the wet stuff is expected to hit the Fraser Valley, while less than 30 millimetres is expected in Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada has warned that the ground in the region is already near saturation and has little ability to absorb further rainfall, which could lead to water pooling on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Recent wet weather, combined with darker days, has already caused hazardous road conditions in the region. Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham said weather was a potential factor in a slew of crashes this week.

“We saw 40 collisions that the Vancouver Police Department responded to in a 24-hour time period, which is a significant number,” Fincham said. “Of those 40, there were nine involving pedestrians and two of those involved cyclists.”
