A massive fire that ripped through a boat at a marina in False Creek late Tuesday night is under investigation.

The fire erupted on board what officials describe as a 40-foot fibreglass sailboat docked at the Burrard Civic Marina around 10 p.m.

Witnesses report hearing multiple loud explosions before seeing flames.

"It sounded like a gunshot, so I looked out this window and saw this boat on fire,"  said Tim Hagberg. "Then I saw the mast crash down, just a disaster."

Fire officials say they moved nearby vessels to prevent the fire from spreading.

"We did a great job, no exposures," said Vancouver Fire Battalion Chief David Laberge. "It could've been one boat after another, but they got two boats on the sides out of burrs which enabled them to extinguish the fire quite quickly."

No one was on board the boat at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported.

The owner of the boat is out of town.
