Mounties are asking the public for help to identify the owner of a series of war medals found in Agassiz last month.

A small box containing seven military service medals was found by a member of the public near the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge. The person who found the medals then turned them in to the RCMP on July 28.

"The medals reach back to a time when the Dominion of Canada was forging an identity as a Nation within the British Empire,” RCMP Cpl. Mike Rail said in a statement Tuesday.

Police were able to identify who the medals were first given to, but haven't been able to track down their current owner. It is not known whether the medals were lost or stolen and discarded.

"We feel the medals could be valuable family heirlooms and are reaching out to the public to assist us in returning them to those families," Rail said.

Anyone with information on the medals' owner, or owners, is asked to contact Agassiz RCMP at 604-796-2211.
